I’ve had this cast iron bathtub for many years. It came with the house when it was built in 1904. I’ve knocked around quite a bit since then and the tub has come along for most of my travels, so it’s time to find out how much does a cast iron tub weigh.
If you’re reading this article because you want to find out how much your cast iron tub weighs, then you’re in luck. I’m going to tell you right now: The nice thing about cast iron is that it’s heavy and easy to measure.
How much does a cast iron tub weigh?
I weighed the tub using a tiny little bathroom scale like this one. Weighing the tub was easy because I just had to slip it onto the bathroom scale’s hook. The tub weighs 250 to 350 pounds as shown below (the small mark on top of the cast iron tub is where my finger is pressing down on the scale):
Note that I’m using this old bathroom scale which only reads to 250 lbs since I don’t need to know the exact weight of the cast iron tub. If your bathroom scale only reads up to 10 lbs or so, then you’ll just have to get out your good old-fashioned calculator and do some math.
It turns out that my bathtub weighs a little bit more than the old 400 lbs weight that was on top of my bathroom scale. The weight shown above is 300 lbs, as you can see.
The cast iron tub weighs the same as 5 adult men! I’ve got 4 sons and one husband so I do wonder what they’d think about me weighing them out on the bathroom scale and getting ready to post their weights on the internet. I’ll leave that up to you.

Cast Iron Tub Pounds vs Kilograms – What’s the Difference?
The big problem with measuring things in pounds is that we know Americans who are trying to lose weight have a tendency to look at pounds as an absolute number. For example, we know that a “pound” is not equal to all pounds in the world.
The metric system makes this easier since you can say something weighs 4 kilograms or 400 grams and it will work anywhere you go without further conversion.
One reason I love measuring things with kilos instead of pounds is that there is no such thing as a “bad” weight. Whether you weigh 250lbs or 300 lbs, the key is to measure your progress based on how much your weight change over time.
This means that measuring things in pounds may lead people into trouble because they’ll look at their absolute weight and get discouraged if it’s not where they want it to be. This is not good because the key is to measure your weight change over time.
I like using kilograms instead of pounds because it makes me feel successful when I look at the amount of weight I’ve lost over time. For example, if I’m trying to lose 10 kg (metric for kilogram is Kg) and my scale shows that I’ve lost 3 Kg in one month, then I’ll know that’s a success!
How much does a 5 foot cast iron clawfoot tub weigh?
A great question since I was looking for a cast iron tub for my tiny bathroom. It turns out that this cast iron tub weighs 250 lbs (same as the scale on top of it). This is good to know because it means I can find the shipping weight using Google, which uses the metric system.
The shipping weight is an important number since it’s the real world and something you can use in your decision-making. For example, if the shipping weight of a cast iron tub is 200 pounds then that means I could take it on an airplane (assuming I could get it there).
However, if the shipping weight were 400 lbs, then I’d have to pay quite a bit of money just to get it shipped. This is why I love using kilograms since if the tub weighs 180 Kg, then that’s the real-world number I can use for decision making. This is especially useful when looking at cast iron bathtubs (or anything else) for sale online because you can decide if you want to make the purchase after looking at cost and size.
