Tank size for a large ultrasonic cleaner can be a bit of a trap for buyers. Although large tanks hold more solutions and can be used for more cleaning, they can also take up a lot of space and be so large that they are not cost effective for the amount of cleaning that they do.
Measure Your Largest Part First
To determine the size of a large ultrasonic cleaner you will need to measure your largest part. In many cases this will be a number of small to medium sized parts which can be cleaned collectively. If, however, you are cleaning a large number of very small items then it is likely that you will require a number of small cleaners. To calculate the minimum internal basket dimension for your largest item(s) measure the length, width and depth of the item(s) and add 30mm to each dimension.
Litres Tell You Less Than You Think

The Two-Thirds Basket Rule
Note that it is not possible to pack a basket full of items to undergo ultrasonic cleaning. The solution needs to be able to move around the items in the basket and thus there needs to be space for all items in the basket and for the solution to move around in the basket. Thus items must be left with space between them for the solution to move around in the basket and items must be left with space above them for the solution to move up and down in the items in the basket. As a general rule a batch of items should not fill more than two-thirds of the basket.
Batch Size and Cleaning Frequency
Consider the number of parts that you clean on a daily basis and the length of time that each part takes to clean in an ultrasonic cleaner. A large ultrasonic cleaner could become a production bottleneck if it is running near full capacity all day. A slightly larger tank could result in fewer runs and therefore more production.
One Large Tank or Two Medium Tanks
A single large tank is suitable for a single type of part, which is cleaned repeatedly. Two medium-sized tanks are more suitable for different materials, which require different cleaning solutions and possibly different temperatures. In this case, you avoid having to drain and fill a tank with a cleaning solution for each job, rather than doing it constantly.
